5 Best Original Soundtrack from Joko Anwar's Cinematic Universe

by: Bambang Irawan

Soundtrack is one of important thing when we talk about film making and as a director, Joko Anwar have a plenty of soundtracks that sounds interesting.

When Budiman ready to whisper something really necessary at the time to Hendra, he suddenly turn on the radio and one of the top notch soundtrack from this film called Karma playing while Budiman whispering to Hendra and still goes on while Bondi ready to stab Ian with the knife.

Although this scene is one of plothole left from this movie, Karma is one of the outstanding track that Joko Anwar found from one of his masterpiece Pengabdi Setan which still running on cinema till now. It become an open secret, from Janji Joni until Pengabdi Setan Joko Anwar is one of the local director that really pay attention to scoring department and obviously has a plenty of soundtrack from various local independent artist which will stuck in your head as the film roll on.

1. Alfred Ayal – Merry Mist (Pintu Terlarang)

Remember the legendary scene in Pintu Terlarang when Gambir murdered everyone in the notorious christmas eve dinner scene? This scene is much more terrific and beautiful at the same time with Merry Mist played in a background. Merry Mist can fly us to the moon once you heard it, but hearing Merry Mist in the scene will give us goosebump yet haunting feels when Gambir patiently slaughtered one by one everyone sitting in that table(is it okay if I spoilered everything happened in this scene? The fact is this film is made 8 years ago, don’t be triggered).

2. The Adams – Konservatif (Janji Joni)

Janji Joni is undoubtly a heaven for indonesian hipster generation in that era, like a ‘Submarine’ or ‘Pulp Fiction’ for these days generation. And the most recognizeable track in Janji Joni, The Adams’s Konservatif is definetely perfect for this film because it can bring some nostalgic vibe from middle 2000’s. Joko Anwar himself already stated in his tweet a years ago that Konservatif is his most favourite original soundtrack from all of his film so far. Don’t know why, Konservatif make us feels like directly involved in Janji Joni, while Joni with full of desire chasing his crush of lifetime Angelique to the cinema backed by boisterousness of Jakarta.

3. The Spouse – Kelam Malam (Pengabdi Setan)

Beside Karma, Ibu’s bell and Nenek’s horrible atshma, Kelam Malam is exactly the most evil sound you ever heard in Pengabdi Setan and will constantly haunt in your dream. Equal with Merry Mist, Kelam Malam caused a mixed feeling within sinister vibe but divining at the same time. This is what I love so much from watching Joko Anwar’s masterpieces. Kelam Malam, along with Karma also bring some vintage sound and indeed, well produced as well as the film.

4. Aimee Saras – A Copy Of Your Mind (A Copy Of My Mind)

Aimee Saras is one of Joko Anwar’s right hand in producing some fine tunes for his films. Beside Kelam Malam, one of fine tunes sang by her is A Copy Of Your Mind, soundtrack for A Copy Of My Mind featuring Bemby Gusti, another Joko’s right hand. Aimee’s exceptional voice always never fail to hook us to break the replay button. But different from Kelam Malam, A Copy Of Your Mind is very compatible with tender-hearted yet romantic feels, in this case Joko Anwar’s A Copy Of My Mind.

5. Sore – Nancy Bird (Pintu Terlarang)

Along with Aimee Saras, Sore is regular customer to Joko Anwar’s scoring department. Nancy Bird is a typical Sore’s sound which sync with Joko Anwar’s taste in making film. No wonder Bemby Gusti as their drummer still contribute in Joko Anwar’s latest project as the scoring composer.
