One of the most exciting thing you can find in tv series, beside the storyline or cinematography, is the soundtrack. Unsurprisingly the show we find now in various streaming services has a knockout soundtrack, featuring choice gems from the 80’s era as well as new originals from current generation artists. Whilst many of us are binging, we might not put much thought into the soundtracks that complete all our favorite series and the brilliant bits of music and the bands and artists that are on them.

From Stranger Things to Peaky Blinders, I’ve decided to put together a list of the songs that you should put your attention to which feature as the soundtracks for some of the most popular series on Netflix at the moment.

The Black Keys - Lonely Boy

Money Heist (La Casa De Papel) is definitely one of the most popular series on Netflix right now. It is an exhilarating Spanish thriller that revolves around a gang and their leader who try and pull off high-risk heists. As their plan unravels, a soundtrack featuring an eclectic mix of music keeps us on edge. Out of the mix of different genres and eras, one indie rock tune caught my eye.

Lonely Boy is one of most loved songs by The Black Keys, a band that should be on all essential indie rock playlists. True to the nature of the series, Lonely Boy is a slick, fast-paced tune. The blues-rock track is extremely danceable and will surely get you hooked on your first listen. It sets the tone perfectly for their rocking album El Camino, which one Best Rock Album and was nominated for two other awards at the 55th Grammy Awards.

BROCKHAMPTON - BOOGIE

The soundtrack for series On My Block is a cool mix of rap and R&B. Four lifelong friends from a rough neighborhood in Los Angeles try to navigate their way through high school in this critically acclaimed comedy drama. Current R&B favorites such as Khalid, H.E.R., Sabrina Claudio and Raveena are in it but this high energy rap track couldn’t go without notice.

BROCKHAMPTON are an American rap collective who are known for their alternative style. One of their members, Kevin Abstract, is also on the soundtrack as a solo artist. BOOGIE is from their SATURATION trilogy of albums. The dance floor filler will surely get you on your feet, it’s an upbeat, energetic, experimental hip hop beat with plenty of snappy rap hooks.

Alt-J - Tessellate

Atypical is a British series that chronicles the life of autistic teen Sam and his family, as he enters the uncertain world of teenage romance. Setting the scene for Sam’s adventures in adolescence is an electro soundtrack mixed in with bits of pop and rock. There are some great alternative artists such as Glass Animals, Bad Suns, Santigold and a stand-out experimental British band.

Tessellate is a gem from British band alt-J. It is featured on their debut album An Awesome Wave, which garnered the band comparisons with Radiohead. Like most alt-J tracks, their lead singer Joe Newman’s ethereal vocals are woven with delicate guitar riffs and piano parts. The backing of a choir near the end only further elevates this beautiful tune.

Frank Ocean - Moon River

When They See Us received acclaim for its performances and casting. At the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards, it received 11 nominations. A hard-hitting drama based on the true story of five boys who were wrongfully convicted of a brutal crime. The soundtrack is a very powerful mix of music, with classics from Jay-Z, Mos Def and a track by the late Nipsey Hussle, but I was drawn in by this one particular cover.

Frank Ocean is one of the hottest artists in R&B right now, and is well known for his distinctive sound and music style. His cover of Audrey Hepburn’s Moon River is as stunning as it is daring. It’s everything we’ve come to expect from him, it’s a beautiful, modern re-working of a timeless tune, it’s true to his style, and further highlights his creativity as well as his wide vocal range.

Little Simz – Venom

Little Simz is still a highly underrated British rapper, even after recently being praised as one of the best in the game by Kendrick Lamar. From her best album yet, GREY Area, Venom exhibits the rapper’s distinct and deadly flow. The menacing instrumental is bass-heavy with ominous string parts. She delivers blow after blow with her wordplay in this knock-out tune.

The track is on the soundtrack of Top Boy, a drama surrounding modern-day London’s gang warfare. The series was resurrected by Drake, who became a big fan of the show after watching it on tour in the UK. It stars rapper Kano, one of the top boys of the British rap scene. The soundtrack is a rap and R&B mixtape featuring the current best of British such as Kano himself, Dave, AJ Tracey and the maverick rapper.

The Last Shadow Puppets - Used To Be My Girl

The Last Shadow Puppets is Arctic Monkeys front man Alex Turner’s side project with fellow British rocker Miles Kane. It’s retro-vibe baroque rock, rock and roll with a live orchestra. Used To Be My Girl is stylish, with smooth vocals and slick guitar sounds. Melodic, poetic, yet still somewhat striking, it’s a tune that’ll catch your attention for all the right reasons.

This song is featured on the crime drama which follows Tommy Shelby and his criminal gang in the aftermath of World War One, Peaky Blinders. The series has got a rocking soundtrack, with an impressive array of bands, such as Radiohead, The White Stripes, The Black Keys, Arctic Monkeys and so on. Out of all the greats, I’ve chosen the underrated British band.

The Velvet Underground - Sunday Morning

American Rock band The Velvet Underground’s genre-defining debut album is known for its now-iconic cover art, a print of a banana by famed pop art artist and the band’s manager at the time, Andy Warhol. Sunday Morning is its opening track. It’s a dainty tune with beautiful lyrics, twinkling chimes, a comforting bassline, delicate string parts and the celeste – which makes it all even prettier.

This song perfectly fit on multi award-winning drama-comedy series, Orange Is The New Black, which revolves around Piper Chapman, who’s past crimes come back to haunt her and is sentenced to 15 months at a women’s prison. Following her and the other inmate’s struggles is a soundtrack with a broad mix of different genres. In between the mix is the vintage tune from the overly influential band that you need to hear.

You can find all the tunes I’ve mentioned on this list on a specially made playlist on the Indie Accent Spotify, as well as other great recommendations.
