REBELSUNS DEBUT EP
RELEASED ON 2017

After three singles, South Jakarta’s very own alternative pop duo, rebelsuns has finally launched their debut EP “Romance Dawn.” As the title goes, their EP revolves around youthful romance and all of its emotional journey. Filled with six upbeat songs, Gilang Wisnandar and Dai Ramadhani prove that their music is here to stay.

The much cheerful “Save Your Breath” opens up this EP beautifully. Even though the song seems colorful and happy, it tells the tale of the lustful burdens of one night stands. In an interview they had the duo confessed that this song was the trickiest to finish because of the many musical influences they tried to pour into it. The romance-filled narrative continued with “Talking”, an urban-electronic pop song about modern heartbreak that has quite a catch to it. With a fair amount of guitar and head-popping drum beats, rebelsuns packed an unrequited love into an entertaining song in “World Number Two.” The chorus of this song will be easy to remember and fun to sing along to.

“Romance Dawn” continues with the most familiar track on the album, “Portland”. The song itself is an easy-listen and even has its music video they made last year! Moving on to “The Things We Did (In The Thing We Had)” where the drums and guitars put a vibrant touch to this song. Like most of the song on the EP, it was packed with a sense of youthfulness energy. To save the best for the last, “Headlights” was the most suitable song to end this EP. It had a distinctly different color from the rest of the tracks, leaning heavily towards hip-hop and opening it with A. Nayaka’s verse over Dai’s vocalizing. It’s also the most-played song in this EP with over seven thousand streams on Spotify. Rebelsuns has nailed a song that’s definitely out of their comfort zone.

We could say that “Romance Dawn” has this feel-good and fresh vibe through and through. They’ve successfully cloak heartbreaking love lyrics over a catchy pop beat and enjoyable arrangement, the EP never strays from its core narrative as well. Cannot wait to see what Rebelsuns’ has in store next!

Final Verdict: 3.5/5
